itching, burning, or swelling in and around your vagina

pain or discomfort in your vagina during sex

a burning feeling when urinating (peeing)

vaginal discharge that often looks like cottage cheese (it may also be thinner or absent)

Symptoms of a yeast infection are similar to a number of other conditions, including bacterial vaginosis (a bacterial infection of the vagina), trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection), and contact or allergic dermatitis (a skin reaction to an irritating or allergic substance) (show table 1). It is often not possible to know, based on symptoms alone, if vulvar itching is caused by yeast or other potential causes. (See “Self-diagnosis” below).

Abnormal vaginal discharge

There are other conditions with similar symptoms, such as bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted disease. Itching and redness of the vulva can also be caused by a reaction to vaginal products such as soap, bath oils, spermicidal jelly, or douches. When it comes to the signs and symptoms of a yeast infection it is important to first note that different vaginal infections will have similar symptoms so if you are having the symptoms for the first time or if you are unsure about the proper course of treatment then you should visit your doctor for a proper diagnosis. A yeast infection is the result of an overgrowth in an organism called Candida Albicans. This organism can often live in the vagina in small numbers without any symptoms, but symptoms will develop when the organism multiplies and grows out of control as a result in the change of environment.
